New milestone for Bank-Verlag as a Trust Service Provider: BV-SAM for qualified remote signatures obtains eIDAS certification

With the admission and certification of the Signature Activation Module (SAM), Bank-Verlag GmbH (BV) has reached another landmark for its eIDAS Trust Service. The technology company based in Cologne has developed its own BV-SAM, which among other things operates user authentification necessary for issuing qualified eIDAS signatures.

The creation of an eIDAS-compliant remote signature requires a so-called Qualified Signature Creation Device (QSCD). This type of software is designed to operate inside a Hardware Security Module (HSM) and offers the possibility to relocate the entire process security – for the creation of signatures – into the HSM. Thereby, formerly necessary security measures can largely be eliminated.

After more than two years of product development Hans-Peter Kraus, Head of PM Security & Trusted Services, reveals his contentment with his employees as well as external development partners:

„In finalizing the certification of our BV-SAM we managed to implement a flexible and eIDAS-compliant user authentication that is required for the creation of qualified remote signatures. Thus it is now for the first time possible to integrate the qualified signature function into existing processes without going through a new certification every single time. In this way, for example TAN-verification-procedures, which the customer already uses for online banking, can be used for the signature. The fact that BV-SAM grants control over process security within a high-security HSM environment is another unique selling point.“

Although BV-SAM was originally developed only for the company‘s own eIDAS Trust Service, Bank-Verlag has already received numerous requests for the SAM from Trust Service Providers (TSP) within the entire European eIDAS-area.

Kraus states: „As a newcomer on the European market for TSPs we seem to be well positioned already. I think we can be proud of that.“
